Día de Muertos is a blend of Mesoamerican ritual, European religion and Spanish culture. But above all its labels, it is about love and gratitude. It is believed that the gates of heaven open at midnight to let the spirits of lost friends and family rejoin their families at their altar and graves, guided by the smell of the Flower of Death (Cempasúchil). Loved ones sing, drink, dance and share meals together, all within an endless sea of candles that illuminate the pictures of their lost ones. This tradition is not limited to a memorial, it is a celebration of life. It does not resurface sorrow of the loss, but serves as a grateful reminder of the time spent in love. Before and after these rituals, there are a lot of different celebrations. Oaxacans showcase their cultural heritage through parades and traditions. With this Documentary Short FIlm I aspire to capture the many layers of this cultural heritage. From the extensive preparation, to the multi-day festive expressions. To experience and relive what is at the core of this ancient tradition. To spark a sense of wonder and convey the feeling of being surrounded by all its forms.
